I Seek Cuddles: Companionship, Affection and a Little Human Warmth
There comes a point in life when you begin thinking about what you wanted, what you achieved, and what never happened.
One of the things that upsets me most is that I never had children. I imagined that becoming a father might be part of my life, and accepting that it hasn’t happened has been difficult.
As I’ve grown older, my priorities have also changed. Sex no longer feels like the centre of what I’m looking for. What I find myself wanting is something much simpler: I seek cuddles.
I want the warmth of having someone beside me. I want a hug after a difficult day, someone to sit with on the sofa, someone to talk to over a cup of tea and someone whose company makes the house feel a little less empty.
There is something powerful about affectionate human contact that doesn’t have to lead anywhere. Holding hands, cuddling, laughing together and simply enjoying another person’s presence can mean a great deal.
Growing older doesn’t mean that the desire for closeness disappears. If anything, it can make you appreciate the quieter forms of affection even more.
I can’t change the years that have already passed or the fact that I never became a father. But I can still look for friendship, companionship, affection and happiness in the years ahead.
Sometimes you don’t need anything complicated.
Sometimes you just need a cuddle.
